WOCAT – World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies

WOCAT is a global network on Sustainable Land Management (SLM) that promotes the documentation, sharing and use of knowledge to support adaptation, innovation and decision-making in SLM. This is done through:

  • Maintaining a global, open SLM network
  • Providing free access to a global SLM data repository
  • Building capacities at local, regional and national level
  • Harmonizing and developing tools and methods with partners

WOCAT’s Global Database on Sustainable Land Management rovides free access to more than 2000 SLM practices from over 150 countries around the world. The WOCAT Database is the primary recommended database for SLM best practices by the UNCCD.

WOCAT’s SLM decision support tools have been developed with partners and tested in over 15 countries.

WOCAT collaborates with a broad variety of organizations such as international organizations (e.g. World Bank, IFAD, FAO), development cooperation (e.g. GIZ, SDC), governmental organizations (Ministries of Agriculture, Ministries of Environment), and NGOs.

WOCAT is steered by its Consortium Partners:

 University of Bern, Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) , Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), ISRIC World Soil Information , Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) , International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) , International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA).
